Born in Brooklyn, New York, guitarist Terrence McManus grew up in New Jersey and Connecticut. He has performed with guitarist Bill Frisell, trumpeter Herb Robertson's quartet, bassist Kermit Driscoll's trio, drummers Michael Sarin and Gerry Hemingway, bassist Anthony Cox's groups Regional Jazz and the Happy Trio, and has performed at Carnegie Hall, the New York Guitar Festival, Ellis Island, The Knitting Factory, CBGBs, the Hartford Jazz Festival, Baltimore's Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Festival, and the inaugural month at John Zorn's The Stone.

Terrence has formed and led numerous ensembles that have performed his original compositions. These groups have included musicians Steve LaSpina, Ben Street, Derek Phillips, Nate Wooley, Ted Poor, Ches Smith, Loren Stillman, Johnathan Blake, Danny Weiss, Jacob Sacks, Eivind Opsvik, Thomas Morgan, David Ambrosio, and John O'Gallagher. Active in the New York improvised music scene, Terrence has performed on many new music series, including the Vision Club Series (Manhattan), Night of the Ravished Limbs (Brooklyn), On the Way Out (Brooklyn), Konceptions (Brooklyn), New Languages Festival (Brooklyn) , Open Ear Music Series(Manhattan), and Freestyle Jazz (Manhattan). In November of 2004, Terrence was invited to perform in the first Minnesota Sur Seine jazz festival in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. During the festival he performed with Fat Kid Wednesdays, Anthony Cox, and several European musicians including saxophonist Francois Corneloup, pianist Tony Hymas, and clarinetist Denis Colin.

Terrence is currently a member of several projects that focus on original music and group improvisation, and feature some of New York's most talented performers and composers. The Kermit Driscoll trio features bassist Kermit Driscoll, and drummer Gerry Hemingway. The Terrence McManus/Gerry Hemingway duo features percussionist Gerry Hemingway. thirty9thirty8 features trumpeter Dave Ballou and drummer Devin Gray. 3-0 features trombonists Tyshawn Sorey and Ben Gerstein. Soto Valez features drummer Tyshawn Sorey, trombonist Ben Gerstein, and bassist Chris Tordini. Arnal/Drye/McManus features drummer Jeff Arnal and trombonist Brian Drye . The Battaglia/McManus Duo features Terrence and guitarist Joe Battaglia. Terrence has also been a guest performer with the new music group, Ensemble Pamplemousse.

Also an accomplished solo guitarist, Terrence performs his own compositions and arrangements, and has developed a unique style of improvisation, drawing on extended technique and prepared guitar. Terrence's solo improvisations were featured in the New York City debut of the Fermin Cabal play Disappeared(Tejas Verdes). The play's month long residency took place at the Richmond Shepard Theatre in September 2006.

In 2006 Terrence formed Flattened Planet, a record label dedicated to the promotion of new, creative, and improvised music. The label has several releases including: Pastellic Reflections, a series of seven improvised duets performed acoustically with guitarist Joe Battaglia, Bates/Linz/McManus, a collection of trios, duets, and solos, Live at the Clown Lounge, a live performance from the historic Clown Lounge in St. Paul, MN, and thirty9thirty8, a live trio recording. Musicians on the Flattened Planet label include guitarist Terrence McManus, trumpeter Dave Ballou, guitarist Joe Battaglia, drummer JT Bates, saxophonist Michael Lewis, drummer Devin Gray, and bassist Adam Linz.

In 2008 Terrence will be featured along with many of the world's top guitarists in an exhibition by legendary photographer Ralph Gibson, at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit titled, The State of the Axe, will also be released as a book on Yale University Press.
